For my project I am proposing that I develop a webserver that I can use as a photo gallery that can be shared with others. The aim of this project is to have a single website that can be shared with friends and family to show and display personal photography work.
Instead of sharing photos to social media where the photos become compressed and cropped for mobile viewing, a gallery website would allow me to have my best photos all in one place in high quality. Additionally, I plan to use a template that allows for the convenient display of each photo’s technical specifications such as camera, lens, resolution, shutter speed, iso etc. The website should be best suited for desktop viewing however should also have a mobile framework to allow for seamless viewing on mobile devices.
As I have little experience in frontend web development I plan on using a free template that can be edited and configured to my liking and although the content on the website (photos) will be mine I will still be crediting the websites design to the original creator.
For this project I will be using a Microsoft azure Ubuntu Linux virtual machine. By using SSH from my local computer I will have command line access to the virtual machine. Using the command line, I will be able to install nginx and start hosting my webserver.
Copyright Justification: The licence I have chosen for my project is Copyright. One of the benefits of creating my own photography/gallery website, instead of uploading my photos to a website such as Unsplash or social media, is that I can maintain full copyright ownership over my photos. In the terms and conditions of websites like unsplash and many social media platforms, they reserve the right to use any content uploaded to them in any way they see fit. Having my own webserver with photos means that I can both share my photos with others and maintain full copyright ownership over them.
